From zero to AI hero – My action plan

You know what the say about a fool with a plan. So, to be sure I stand a chance, I’ve built an action plan for the next stages of my AI adventure. Of course, nothing on this plan is written in stone. It is a living document I’ll do my best to keep honest, by reflecting on it all the changes in mindset, expectations and goals I might go trough as I learn the nits and grits of this amazing industry.

The gist of my Action Plan

To get trained and certified on the development of AI applications powered by the platforms of the three big players, Azure, Google, and Amazon. As per the specific certifications, today I think I’ll pursue the following: Microsoft’s Azure AI Engineer Associate, Google’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer, and Amazon’s AWS Machine Learning Engineer.

After getting trained and certified, I plan to build one small/medium application on each platform to get a real-life taste of their potentials and limitations and, simultaneously, build my portfolio (and document it here). The main goal of this long process is to finally select the platform that better works for me and build a larger, more complex application on it, preferably for a customer, and possibly for free. I trust I’ll have a much better understanding of what I’ll want to do next at that point.

While typing this post, I’ve gone only trough ~65% of the material on the Azure AI Engineer Associate’s curriculum. Thirteen more modules to go and then a 2 hours proctored exam to get certified.

Since I’m doing this on the time left after work and parenting commitments, I don’t need Co-pilot, Gemini, Bedrock or even Chat GPT to tell me that I wont be striking out step #2 of my plan on the current calendar year. This will be a Q1 2025 milestone at best.

1.- Create a website to document all my progress.

Update: Decided to go with Bluehost. It was very easy to set up a WordPress website based on their templates.

2.- Certify Azure AI Engineer Associate.
3.- Develop a Project running in Azure AI services. Add to the portfolio. (in course)
4.- Certify Google AI.
5.- Develop a Project running in Google AI services. Add to the portfolio.
6.- Certify AWS AI services.
7.- Develop a Project running in AWS AI services. Add to the portfolio.
8.- Based on the accumulated experience, select a platform to specialize into.
9.- Build a larger project, to be powered by the selected platform. Preferably for a client. Possibly for free.
10.- Define next stage: 1) Apply for a job, 2) Offer Freelance AI Services, 3) Build a product and put it out there, or 4) All the above.
